EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a powerful treatment to relieve many types of disturbing memories that have had long lasting negative effects on you. After successful EMDR sessions, you will no longer re-live the negative images, sounds and feelings which have stayed in your head. You will still remember what happened, but it is less upsetting. This is because EMDR has a direct effect on the way that your brain processes information. EMDR helps you to see the disturbing events in a less distressing way, and this lets you to go on with your life. During the sessions, you may experience intense emotions, but by the end of each session, most people report a positive change in how they feel. They feel better. They feel like they've gained some control over their life again.

Scientific research has shown that EMDR is a very effective treatment for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). EMDR decreases, even eliminates, the symptoms of PTSD for most people, and it can work faster than other treatments. The US department of Veteran Affairs and the Department of Defense have found EMDR to be effective for treating post traumatic stress.

So what is an EMDR session actually like? You and your therapist will work together and decide exactly what you are going to focus each session on.You and your therapist can decide if you will be doing eye movements or another form of bilateral stimulation. Your job is to just let whatever happens, happen, and not try to stop it or judge it.

Before you start doing the EMDR sessions, you'll talk to your therapist to help him/her understand more about you, because this is the best way to get you feeling better faster.
